  1. You sure always insure your dog has a collar and identification tag with your name and phone number in the event he becomes lost or stranded.
  2. Maintain your dog’s inoculations.  Keep a copy of this with your important papers you would take with you in an evacuation.  If you are fortunate enough to find a shelter that takes animals it is important to have this documentation.
  3. Prepare a list of pet-friendly hotels and motels outside the disaster area that might be able to house you and your dog.
  4. Prepare a list of veterinarians and boarding facilities that might be able to board your dog.
  5. Place the lists and other results of your research in a safe place where you will be sure to have access in a disaster.
  6. Take your dog with you if you leave the area.  Your dog should never be left alone during this time with food and water, and you hoping for the best. Animals can sense significant atmospheric changes and react in different ways when left alone.  You may find that more damage was done to your home by the dog freaking out than the actual storm.  Also, if a door or window gets blown in, your dog can escape the house and face additional danger. You should be concerned about the roof or a wall caving in and crushing your dog.  Your dog could drown if there is flooding.
  7. If you travel frequently and might be away when disaster strikes, having a buddy in the neighborhood who will look after your dog may be his only chance for survival. Being a buddy to a neighbor’s dog will help ensure that others’ animals are protected in times of distress.
  8. Know the locations of animal shelters in your area in case your dog gets lost.  You should begin your search by checking the shelters.
  9. When you return to your home, you may not know the condition and you may not have a place to stay much less a place for your pet.  Set up temporary shelter with friends or relatives outside of the disaster area as a contingency shelter for your dog.
  10. Make provisions in your disaster kit for your pet’s needs.  Pet stores or mail order business may have ready-made kit or you may want to put one together.
