Maintain the Health of Your Dog

Healthy Doggy Diet!

Healthy Doggy Diet!

Good nutrition is critical for the health of your dog.  It affects the longevity of your pet’s life and is one of the most vital parts of caring for your dog.  It is important that your pet’s diet be a consideration at all stages of their life.

Finding the right food is not an easy task with the massive amount of products lining the shelves of grocery and pet stores.  Though most products on the shelves are usually marked with some sort of puppy, medium size, mature dogs, etc., picking the right one for your dog can be a daunting task.

Here are some considerations to ensure your dog is receiving the best nutrition:

What is your dog’s ideal body weight?

Obviously the ideal weight of your dog is going to depend on the breed and age of the dog.  To maintain the right body weight, the body condition of your dog should be well proportioned with an easily observable waist and the ribs can be felt through a slight layer of fat covering them.

How much should you feed your dog?

There are several factors to consider when determining the appropriate volume of food for your dog.  The dog’s metabolism, activity level and genetics all come into play. Once you dog is mature his or her intake levels off and you should feed only enough food to maintain their body weight

When should you feed your dog?

If possible, feed your dog at the same time every day.  This will get both of you on a routine so you don’t forget and your dog will know when to expect it and will remind you if you forget. Also, others in the house will not over- feed the dog because they know if and when he or she was last fed.

What else can I do to keep my dog healthy?

Like a human should see their personal physician on a regular basis, your pet should see a veterinarian.  The vet is your best source for what to feed your dog and how much from the time you get the puppy.  The veterinarian may identify that your dog has allergies and may need to have a specific protein based food to avoid reactions.
