Invisible Fencing
Invisible or hidden fencing has become quite popular to keep dogs safe on their property and people safe off the property but to understand how they work and the advantages and disadvantages.
Having a fenced in yard for your dog to roam untethered is great for both you and your dog but a fence does not always keep them contained. Have you ever had your dog dig under the fence so you are out there filling the hole in and placing stones, wood or concrete in the hole to deter your dog from digging in that place again only to have him find a new place to go under the fence? Some dogs can even climb a chain link fence and go over the top.
Perhaps you might want to consider a hidden fence system using underground wiring, a control module and a radio activated collar. This system can work well in conjunction with your fenced in yard and also to the perimeter of your property that is not fenced.
The basic idea of the hidden fence system is that a control unit sends encoded pulses through the buried wire that only the collar can decode. As a dog with the radio activated collar nears the wiring, the collar will begin to beep to warn the dog. When the dog moves closer to the limits established by the wire he will eventually receive a shock through the collar. Because the radio waves from the wire are pulsing, the dog does not receive a steady shock but an intermittent shock that will stop when the dog moves away from the wire. When used in conjunction with a fenced in yard, this will keep the dog away from the fence so they cannot dig out.
This type of system does require training your dog to understand what is going to happen if they come too close to the fence or the perimeter established by where the wire is buried. Through training your dog will understand that the beeping from the collar will occur before he actually receives a gentle shock.
Eventually, the dog will turn back when the collar beeps and he learns where the limits of when he can go.
Do not be concerned about the mild shock your pet receives. It is not enough to injure your dog. Eventually he will learn and not put himself in a situation to be shocked. Be forewarned however, if you have your dog outside and he is running and hits the perimeter, he can go across the wire without being shocked because of the pulsating radio signal. If your dog does break through the barrier, turn your hidden fence control module off before trying to bring your dog back into the perimeter of the fence or else he will be shocked.
