There are thousands of dogs suffering in puppy mills. Puppy mills are solely for the greed of the owner and provide little if any real care to their dogs. Dogs are kept for the purpose of breeding. They are kept in cages for most of their life. Females are bred every time they come into heat because a litter of puppies, depending on the bred, can be worth well over a thousand dollars.

These dogs are left outside and suffer through extreme cold and heat and there is no hope of having a better situation. Once their breeding life is over, the dog has no value to the owners and more often than not is killed, abandoned or if there is some modicum of compassion, taken to a shelter.

Most animal rights activists recommend boycotting pet stores for buying a puppy but this does not help the puppies that the pet stores already have. If you are looking to buy a puppy and you chose to go to a pet store, which is where most of the litters of puppy mills are sold, ask them where the puppies came from. If you can visit the facility, then by all mean do it. If they cannot answer your questions to your satisfaction then you should consider passing.

Unfortunately, most agencies do not concern themselves with where the puppies come from but how they are treated by the person who is responsible for them.

This is a desperate cycle that needs to be broken but it is difficult to justify not purchasing a puppy from a pet store because you will be providing a loving home. The real place to start is tracking down these puppy mills and putting the owners out of business because of the abuse the breeding dogs suffer.

These mills are driven by greed and nothing else.

One thing you may consider is to work with or contribute to a dog rescue agency. These types of agencies look to remove dogs from situations where a dog or dogs are suffering and helping find homes for them. Another is when you are aware of a puppy mill, report them to the local authorities, including the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

In the Lowcountry, we are faced with the possibility of a hurricane every season. Fortunately there have only been a few times in the last twenty years that have been of significant consequence however you need to give some serious consideration for the care and safety of your dog during these times. Knowing what to do with your dog will help him survive the situation.

Protect Your Puppy In a Storm!

You sure always insure your dog has a collar and identification tag with your name and phone number in the event he becomes lost or stranded.

Maintain your dog’s inoculations. Keep a copy of this with your important papers you would take with you in an evacuation. If you are fortunate enough to find a shelter that takes animals it is important to have this documentation.

Prepare a list of pet-friendly hotels and motels outside the disaster area that might be able to house you and your dog.

Prepare a list of veterinarians and boarding facilities that might be able to board your dog.

Place the lists and other results of your research in a safe place where you will be sure to have access in a disaster.

Take your dog with you if you leave the area. Your dog should never be left alone during this time with food and water, and you hoping for the best. Animals can sense significant atmospheric changes and react in different ways when left alone. You may find that more damage was done to your home by the dog freaking out than the actual storm. Also, if a door or window gets blown in, your dog can escape the house and face additional danger. You should be concerned about the roof or a wall caving in and crushing your dog. Your dog could drown if there is flooding.

If you travel frequently and might be away when disaster strikes, having a buddy in the neighborhood who will look after your dog may be his only chance for survival. Being a buddy to a neighbor’s dog will help ensure that others’ animals are protected in times of distress.

Know the locations of animal shelters in your area in case your dog gets lost. You should begin your search by checking the shelters.

When you return to your home, you may not know the condition and you may not have a place to stay much less a place for your pet. Set up temporary shelter with friends or relatives outside of the disaster area as a contingency shelter for your dog.

Make provisions in your disaster kit for your pet’s needs. Pet stores or mail order business may have ready-made kit or you may want to put one together.
