A clean dog is a healthy dog! Grooming your dog is important to not only the physical appearance but also affects the way you and your pet feel. Here are some important things to remember about grooming your dog.

A bath: Just like a human, bathing removes loose hair, dead skin cells and any dirt or other debris that may attach itself to your dog. This is a time to identify fleas, tick and other insects that may infest the dog. This is a great opportunity to check your dog’s ears, extremities and genitals for any abnormalities. A bath is the first consideration if your dog is scratching himself more than normal.

Trim the nails: Trimming a dog’s nails will help to prevent dirt and germs from collecting in beneath them. It will also prevent scratching people if your dog jumps on people and keeps furniture and other parts of your home safe from damage. Care should be taken when trimming nails and should be done by experienced and knowledgeable people such as groomers.

Groom their coat: Long hair dogs require much more attention in this area than short hair dogs. Dogs with long or thick coats can look bad if nothing is done to maintain their coasts such as trims or cuts to reduce the bulk as the weather changes. Dogs that stay outside rather than a house pet can quickly get dirty and grimy, with mud collecting and caking on their long hair. Keep long hair dogs trimmed will make their coat much easier for the owner to maintain and be more comfortable for the dog in the long run. Keeping the hair around the eyes will help long haired dogs see better.

Regular brushing: Long haired breeds tend to shed more than others so brushing will accomplish two things. First is will help to keep the dog’s coat clean and sleek by removing knots and mattes. It will also help to remove loose hair to keep it from collecting on furniture, rugs and carpets and the clothes of people he chooses to greet with affection.

Clean teeth: Dogs can get bad breath just like people and can also suffer from gum and tooth diseases. Cleaning a dog’s teeth will help with his breath but it is also a good time to check the condition of his teeth and gums. If you or your groomer notices something, it should be brought to the attention of your veterinarian.

When your pet is well-groomed, it is so much easier to enjoy your pet and be close. When your dog is clean, manicured and has better breath, he is much more likely to be healthy. People can spot a well maintained pet and you will feel much better too.
