Is Your Dog Boarding Facility Properly Accredited?

The Pet Care Services Association (formerly known as the American Boarding Kennel Association or ABKA), is a non-profit trade based association in the United States and around the world. It is the only trade association of its type whose members commit to a code of ethics and a pet owner’s bill of rights to ensure that pets receive professional, loving care. Its members offer a variety of services including boarding, grooming, training, pets supplies and a host of other products and services which are pet related.

The PCSA sponsors the Voluntary Facilities Accreditation (VFA) program which provides pet care facilities a chance to demonstrate their compliance to a comprehensive set of industry standards and earn accreditation. Under the program facilities are rated on over 250 standards in 17 separate areas of pet care facility operations, management, and customer service. These standards reflect the views of veterinarians, facility operators, humane organization and pet owners based on the “state of the art” in animal care and management.

To be considered for the VFA program, pet care facilities are required to be in operations for a minimum of six months. After enrolling, the facilities must submit an application with detailed information regarding their care procedures, operations and business policies. Each facility undergoes an onsite inspection and evaluation conducted by a representative of the VFA program. Upon successful complete, the facility is awarded a ”Certificate of Accreditation” indicating a commitment to high quality professional care for pets.

There are two levels of VFA program accreditation. Level I standards are considered essential for proper facility operation and receives the PCSA’s Silver accreditation. Level II represents facilities who want to distinguish themselves by demonstrating they offer additional services and/or meet a higher level of standard. Level II facilities may qualify of PCSA’s Gold accreditation.

Facilities that have receive accreditation display the Pet Care Services Association VFA Ribbon in the facility’s office. Pet owners can be assured that they are entrusting their pet to the care of a responsible provider in the commercial pet care industry.

Are There Risks of My Dog Getting Sick at a Boarding Facility?

All dog boarding facilities are not alike… which why it is so important for owners to not only ask pertinent and probing questions when looking for a boarding facility but to physically visit and check the accommodations where they will be leaving their pet.

The owner should check the facility, pay attention for how clean the kennel area is kept. Ask them how often they expect their employees to check the areas and what do they do to prevent the spread of any illness among the dogs they are boarding. Do they allow the dog to use his own bowls from home for feeding and water? Can the dog use his or her own bedding?

Does the facility have a policy regarding someone leaving a sick dog? Do they check the inoculation records of dogs being left in their care? What do they do when a dog in their care gets sick? These policies should be posted clearly or being part of a boarding agreement signed by pet owners.

Some veterinary offices also offer boarding. The chance of a pet being exposed to sick dogs is obviously greater unless the office is totally separate from the boarding facility. Is the same person doing the feeding for all the sick and boarding animals? Will the sick and boarding animals be intermingled at any time? Again the same questions should be posed to the vet’s office that would be asked of the boarding facility.

There is always some risk of a dog becoming sick at either a boarding facility or a veterinarian run facility. The key is to reduce the risk through cleanliness and exposure. If the boarding facility can prove it takes the greatest caution for the care and safety of the dog and satisfies the owner’s expectations then the next step is to leave the pet for a test.

Pet Boarding the Right Way!

If you are looking for a facility to board your dog, ask other dog owners who they use for boarding their dog. Ask their opinion and any other questions you consider important to the safety and care of your pet. If you can’t find any recommendations that meet your level of comfort you may have to start your own search for a facility where you know your pet will receive the care you expect.

Dog boarding is designed to provide your pet with sufficient care when you are required to be away from your pet for overnight to a few weeks. Most dog boarding facilities will provide great care for your pet but you should consider the following guidelines for insuring your peace of mind.

You can use the Internet to find facilities in your area that may be possible candidates. Read the information on their website if they have one and any recommendations that your may find in directories for dog boarding facilities in the area.
After you have created your list, you may want to call the dog boarding facilities and ask them about specific areas or concerns you may have. Do they have an open area for your dog to play? How often do they get out of their kennels?
If your dog has specific needs like medication required daily, or specific diet/feeding time, etc. you should discuss this with the facility to be sure your dog will get the medication or whatever as required.
You may have questions regarding the staff. Do they use of vet techs? Is there a veterinarian on staff? What are the credentials of the people who will be taking care of your pet?
Do the people who run the boarding facility have their own pets. Pet lovers will take good care of your dog.
Once you have done your phone research you should narrow down the potential boarding facilities to a list to visit. You should visit the facility, take a tour and watch them with their “boarders”.

Do they have crates/kennels large enough for you dog? Does each animal have its own crate/kennel? Can you bring your pet’s own water and food bowls? Can he have his bed he uses at home? How do they feed and water the dogs?

Are the facilities clean and or are there piles of dog feces in the kennels? Do they require all immunizations to be up to date and on file for the dogs in their care? Be sure to get all your questions answered before you leave.

Once you have check the dog boarding facilities on your list, you now have the knowledge to make an informed decision. And when it is time to use the facility, make your good-byes short and simple to reduce the anxiety of the pet and the owner.
